2. STANDARDS:

Structure and Function in Living Systems
5. The anatomy and physiology of plants and animals illustrate the complementary
nature of structure and function.
As a basis for understanding this concept, students know:
a. plants and animals have levels of organization for structure and function, including cells,
tissues, organs, organ systems, and the whole organism.
b. organ systems function because of the contributions of individual organs, tissues, and cells.
The failure of any part can affect the entire system.
c. how bones and muscles work together to provide a structural framework for movement.
d. how the reproductive organs of the human female and male generate eggs and sperm, and
how sexual activity may lead to fertilization and pregnancy.
e. the function of the umbilicus and placenta during pregnancy.
f. the structures and processes by which flowering plants generate pollen and ovules, seeds, and fruit.
g. how to relate the structures of the eye and ear to their functions.

Physical Principles in Living Systems (Physical Science)
6. Physical principles underlie biological structures and functions.
As a basis for understanding this concept, students know:
a. visible light is a small band within a very broad electromagnetic spectrum.
b. for an object to be seen, light emitted by or scattered from it must enter the eye.
c. light travels in straight lines except when the medium it travels through changes.
d. how simple lenses are used in a magnifying glass, the eye, camera, telescope, and microscope.
e. white light is a mixture of many wavelengths (colors), and that retinal cells react differently with
different wavelengths.
f. light interacts with matter by transmission (including refraction), absorption, or scattering (including reflection).
g. the angle of reflection of a light beam is equal to the angle of incidence.
h. how to compare joints in the body (wrist, shoulder, thigh) with structures used in machines
and simple devices (hinge, ball-and-socket, and sliding joints).
i. how levers confer mechanical advantage and how the application of this principle applies to the
musculoskeletal system.
j. contractions of the heart generate blood pressure, and heart valves prevent backflow of blood in the circulatory system.

The two main functions of capillaries are:

1) to take oxygenated blood from arteries to the cells of the body

2) to remove deoxygenated blood from the cells back into the veins

6. NEW - Umbilical Cord and Placenta

external image Anatomy-fetus-in-utero11-24-12.gif

The umbilical cord connects a baby in the womb to its mother.
It runs from an opening in your baby’s stomach to the placenta in the womb.
The average cord is about 50cm (20 inches) long.

Functions of the Placenta:
1. Oxygen and food pass from your blood supply into the placenta. From there,
the umbilical cord carries the oxygen and food to your unborn baby.
2. Waste products from the baby, such as carbon dioxide, pass back along the
umbilical cord to the placenta and then into your bloodstream, for your body to dispose of them.
3. The placenta produces hormones that help your baby to grow and develop.
4. The placenta also gives some protection against infection for your baby while it's in the womb.
5. The placenta passes antibodies from you to your baby, giving them immunity for about three months after birth.

Lust, Romantic Love, and Attachment
external image t1larg.romantic.love.drug.jpg

Lust is an emotional force that is directly associated with the thinking or fantasizing about one's desire,
usually in a sexual way. Lust is the initial passionate sexual desire that promotes mating. If we lookout for dictionary meaning it means - pleasure, intense or unbridled sexual desire, enthusiasm, eagerness. But if we talk about past then the word "lust" began being used in the 16th century in theoriginal Koine Greek Bible that has no single word that is uniquely translated as heterosexual lust.

Attraction is the more individualized and romantic desire for a specific candidate for mating than lustand which develops out of lust as commitment to an individual mate forms. The brain consistentlyreleases a certain set of chemicals, including pheromones, dopamine, norepinephrine, andserotonin and this leads to the effects like increased heart rate, loss of appetite and sleep, and an intense feeling of excitement.
If we count the time then Lust may be for a week to a month and attraction generallylasts from one and a half to three years. That's why both are considered temporary.

Attachment is the bonding that promotes relationships lasting for many years and even decades.Attachment is generally based on commitments. It involves marriage and children, or on mutualfriendship based on things like shared interests. It has been linked to higher levels of thechemicals oxytocin and vasopressin to a greater degree than short-term relationships have.

Our planet is constantly changing. Natural cycles balance and regulate Earth and its atmosphere. Human activities can cause changes to these natural cycles.
Life on Earth is well adapted to our planet’s cycles. In our solar system, Earth is the only planet with air to breathe, liquid water to drink, and temperatures that are just right for life as we know it. Because our existence depends on our planet and its climate, we need to understand how what we do affects the Earth.
Scientists try to figure out how our planet works by studying Earth’s cycles. Changes to Earth’s cycles can cause changes in the climates of our planet. The more we know about these cycles, the more we will understand how humans are affecting them and how that might change the planet. Click on the cycles below to learn more about how they work!

Body Worlds The Original Exhibition of Real Human Bodies

2. STANDARDS:

Structure and Function in Living Systems
5. The anatomy and physiology of plants and animals illustrate the
complementary nature of structure and function.
As a basis for understanding this concept, students know:
a. plants and animals have levels of organization for structure and function,
including cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and the whole organism.
b. organ systems function because of the contributions of individual organs,
tissues, and cells. The failure of any part can affect the entire system.
c. how bones and muscles work together to provide a structural framework for movement.
d. how the reproductive organs of the human female and male generate eggs
and sperm, and how sexual activity may lead to fertilization and pregnancy.
e. the function of the umbilicus and placenta during pregnancy.
f. the structures and processes by which flowering plants generate pollen and ovules, seeds, and fruit.
g. how to relate the structures of the eye and ear to their functions.

Physical Principles in Living Systems (Physical Science)
6. Physical principles underlie biological structures and functions.
As a basis for understanding this concept, students know:
a. visible light is a small band within a very broad electromagnetic spectrum.
b. for an object to be seen, light emitted by or scattered from it must enter the eye.
c. light travels in straight lines except when the medium it travels through changes.
d. how simple lenses are used in a magnifying glass, the eye, camera, telescope,
and microscope.
e. white light is a mixture of many wavelengths (colors), and that retinal cells react
differently with different wavelengths.
f. light interacts with matter by transmission (including refraction), absorption, or
scattering (including reflection).
g. the angle of reflection of a light beam is equal to the angle of incidence.
h. how to compare joints in the body (wrist, shoulder, thigh) with structures used in
machines and simple devices (hinge, ball-and-socket, and sliding joints).
i. how levers confer mechanical advantage and how the application of this
principle applies to the musculoskeletal system.
j. contractions of the heart generate blood pressure, and heart valves prevent
backflow of blood in the circulatory system.
