4. Evidence from rocks
allows us to understand
the evolution of life on Earth.
a. Earth processes today are
similar to those that occurred
in the past and slow geologic
processes have large
cumulative effects over long
periods of time.
b. The history of life on Earth
has been disrupted by major
catastrophic events, such
as major volcanic eruptions
or the impact of an asteroid.
c. The rock cycle includes the
formation of new sediment
and rocks.
Rocks are often found in
layers with the oldest
generally on the bottom.
d. Evidence from geologic
layers and radioactive dating
indicate the Earth is
approximately 4.6 billion
years old, and that life
has existed for more
than 3 billion years.
e. Fossils provide evidence
of how life and environmental
conditions have changed.
f. Movements of the Earth's
continental and oceanic
plates through time, with
associated changes in
climate and geographical
connections, have affected
the past and present
distribution of organisms.

Canção do ExílioMinha terra tem palmeiras,
Onde canta o Sabiá
As aves, que aqui gorjeiam,
Não gorjeiam como lá.

Nosso céu tem mais estrelas,
Nossas várzeas têm mais flores,
Nossos bosques têm mais vida,
Nossa vida mais amores.

Em cismar, sozinho, à noite,
Mais prazer encontro eu lá;
Minha terra tem palmeiras,
Onde canta o Sabiá.

Minha terra tem primores,
Que tais não encontro eu cá;
Em cismar — sozinho,
à noite Mais prazer encontro eu lá;
Minha terra tem palmeiras,
Onde canta o Sabiá.

Não permita Deus que eu morra,
Sem que eu volte para lá;
Sem que desfrute os primores
Que não encontro por cá;
Sem qu'inda aviste as palmeiras,
Onde canta o Sabiá.

Mariopteris beneckei (Fern-like Spermatophytes)

Fern-like Spermatophytes (Mariopteris beneckei) was very common in the
Carboniferous period 310 million years ago. They grew probably 15 metres tall;
many of them must have grown like lianas. We presume that this plant group,
which already carried seed, was the predecessor of our seed-producing plants.
It was extinct 220 million years ago.

Natural Selection and by
Artificial Selection with 2 examples each
2. Paleontologists find fossils, reconstruct them, identify the species reconstructed, and solve mysteries about evolution. On a lined piece of paper, describe what it felt like to act like a paleontologist as you reconstructed the skeleton of the animal found within the pellet. What animal did you find? What did you like and/or dislike about reconstructing the skeleton. How much money do you think paleontologists make per year? If you could go anywhere in the world to search for fossil evidence of evolution, where would you go and why? What do you think is the most difficult job of a paleontologist and explain why? Would you like to become a paleontologist? Why or why not? Do you think DNA evidence is a useful as fossil evidence? Explain your answer.

2. STANDARD:

3. Biological evolution accounts for the diversity of species developed through gradual processes over many generations.

As a basis for understanding this concept, students know:

a. both genetic variation and environmental factors are causes of evolution and diversity of organisms.

b. the reasoning used by Darwin in making his conclusion that natural

selection is the mechanism of evolution.

c. how independent lines of evidence from geology, fossils, and comparative anatomy provide a basis for the theory of evolution.

d. how to construct a simple branching diagram to classify living groups of organisms by shared derived characteristics,

and expand the diagram to include fossil organisms.

e. extinction of a species occurs when the environment changes and the adaptive characteristics of a species are insufficient for its survival.

Hypothesis

Best predator:

Most successful prey animal:

Simulation Rules:

1. Get a bird beak tool from the teacher.

2. Pick up one "bug" (bean) at a time and put it in your "mouth" (cup) one by one.

3. If the "bug" is not in your "mouth" when the timer goes off, drop it back into the environment.

4. Select a timer to set the clock for a 15 second hunt. Timer yells START and STOP.

5. Line up the predators on the sidewalk. Each bird has a different beak.

6. Throw out 100 "bugs" of each color on to the grass.

7. Start the timer and the first hunt. Allow students to hunt for 15 seconds and call STOP.

8. Record the number of each kind of "bug" caught by each type of bird beak on the data table.

9. Repeat the experiment for at least 25 hunts and record the data.
